Chapter 13
Casey tore her gaze from the redhead and looked from Liz to Meredith, who raised an eyebrow and grinned.
“You must be Casey,” the woman said, holding out her hand.
“I think so,” Casey said warily and took the offering.
Liz laughed at her flummoxed pose. “This is Dana Corrigan.”
“Nice to meet you?” Casey asked, still cautious.
“I hope so,” Dana said.
“Dana is our neighbor, honey.”
“And you don’t have a shower?” Casey asked.
Dana let out a barking laugh, which had Skye giggling. “I noticed the SUV in the driveway and the For Sale sign missing when I drove by this morning. So I deduced someone moved in,” Dana said. Her smile was very engaging, and her green eyes sparkled mischievously, which irritated Casey.
“Dana is a detective,” Liz said.
Casey offered a smug snort and looked down at Skye. “Now that is sarcasm…”
Liz and Dana laughed again. “No, it’s true. She’s a detective with the Evanston police.”
“I’d show you my badge, but I have no pockets in these shorts,” Dana said, her lips twitching. “I introduced myself to Liz and Meredith, and since it was my day off, I offered to help Liz paint.” She looked around the room. “We did a good job, I think.”
“We did a great job and got both rooms done. We’re ready for the movers,” Liz said happily.
“Well, thanks for helping my wife,” Casey said. She emphasized “my wife” for good measure. She avoided Liz’s glare.
It was not lost on Dana, who hid her grin. “You’re very welcome. I’m glad I could help. And you must be Skye. I’ve already met Tara.”
“Hi.” Skye nodded and clung to Meredith.
“Well, I guess I should be going,” Dana said. “It’s nice to meet the whole family. And I can’t tell you how nice it is to see two more women on this block. I was getting a little lonely.”
“You’re single?” Casey asked, still avoiding the daggers Liz threw her way.
“Yes. I’m not currently in a relationship,” Dana said, quite somber. “Though, after spending the day with your wife…” The grin spread across her face. “I think I want one.”
Liz hid her grin and looked away. Casey glared at their new neighbor.
“One what—a wife or a relationship?”
“Both I would imagine,” Dana said.
“Well, Liz will be a little busy for the next forty years or so,” Casey said evenly.
Dana laughed outright then and offered her hand. “You’re a good sport, Casey. It’ll be fun having you as a neighbor.”
Casey smiled grudgingly and shook her hand. She glanced at Liz, who folded her arms across her chest in that “you’re being a complete ass” pose. “I suppose it’s hard settling down when you’re a detective.”
“It is. But I’m working at getting my law degree. After fifteen years at this, I think it’s time for a change. Anyway, I should be going.”
“Thanks again, Dana,” Liz said. “I could never have finished both rooms without you. When we get settled, we’ll have you over for dinner.”
“Sounds good.”
“Thanks for helping. All kidding aside,” Casey said.
She waited until Liz and Dana walked out of the room before she whirled around to her grandmother.
